# A day trip from Sofia: snowkiting on Vitosha

Vitosha's snowkiting plateau sits right above Sofia, so a lesson fits easily into a stay in the city. Here is what the lesson involves, what it costs and what to bring.

Most capital cities are nowhere near a mountain. Sofia has one sitting directly above it, close enough that the gondola station is inside the city's bus network.

That geography is the whole reason a snowkiting day trip works here.

## Why this is unusual

Vitosha's plateau sits at around 1,960 m, **right above the city** — you can reach it by car or by public transport.

If you are in Sofia for work, for a conference, or as part of a longer Balkans trip, this is unusually easy to fit in.

## The lesson

A lesson is one hour with the instructor, with the kite equipment included: the wind window and the safety release first, then a small trainer kite until steering it no longer takes thought. The course picks up from there — the real kite, then skis or a board, and your first glides. We fit both to the conditions: the date and time are agreed around the forecast, and if the weather turns, we move the lesson. The meeting point is on [the location page](/en/location).

## What it costs

A one-hour lesson is **€60** and includes instruction and the kite equipment — kite, harness, helmet and radio. Skis or a snowboard are your own: we do not rent them, but if you have none we can help you find somewhere that does. The six-hour course, which is what takes you to riding independently, is **€300**.

Add the gondola return fare, or nothing at all if you drive — parking at Aleko is free.

So the day costs the lesson plus the trip up.

## What to bring

You need ski or snowboard clothing — warm waterproof layers, exactly as for a normal day on the mountain. If you are travelling light and did not pack any, there are rental shops near Hladilnika that will kit you out.

The one thing worth getting right is **gloves**: thin enough to feel the bar, warm enough for two hours in wind.

Also: ski goggles, not sunglasses — they are required, like the helmet, and you bring your own. Sun cream, because at 1,960 m over snow you burn through cloud.

We provide the helmet, harness, kite and radio.

## Honest caveats

**You need to be able to ski or snowboard.** Not well — sliding down a gentle slope and stopping is enough. But this is not a sport you can start from zero snow experience in an afternoon.

**Weather moves the date.** If the weather turns, we move the lesson to a date we choose and let you know. If you are in Sofia for a single day, you are relying on luck. With two or three days, you are nearly certain to get a session.

**The plateau can close.** Fog on the plateau means no session, whatever the wind. Fog moves more lessons than a lack of wind does.

Moving a lesson costs nothing, and there is no prepayment, so there is never anything to refund.

## What else to do while you are here

On Vitosha: the Boyana Church (UNESCO-listed), the Dragalevtsi Monastery and the marked hiking trails.

In the city: the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Roman ruins under Serdika metro station and the Central Market Hall.

## Booking it

The practical approach for a visitor:

1. Send us the dates you are in Sofia.
2. We check the wind and snow forecast for those days and tell you honestly what we see.
3. We agree the day — and if the weather turns, we move it and let you know.

If you have three days here, take [the course](/en/prices) split across them — you will leave able to ride on your own, which is a better souvenir than a single lesson.

[Get in touch](/en/book) with your dates and we will look at the forecast with you. If you are still deciding whether the sport is for you, the [beginner's guide](/en/blog/snowkiting-bulgaria-beginners-guide) covers what it actually involves.
