# Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions people ask most often about snowkiting lessons on the Vitosha plateau above Sofia, Bulgaria, at 1,960 m — what to bring, what is provided, conditions and prices. For anything not covered here, call +359 88 456 3319.

### Do I need ski or snowboard experience?

Not strictly, but it helps a great deal. If you have never been on skis or a snowboard, we recommend taking a couple of lessons in one of them first — you will feel far more settled on the snow and progress much faster.

### What should I wear?

Dress as you would for a day of skiing or snowboarding — warm, waterproof layers. Gloves matter more than you might think: you need a good grip on the bar. Ski goggles are required, like the helmet, and you bring your own. We provide the helmet and harness.

### How long does it take to learn snowkiting?

Most people make their first unassisted glides after 3–4 hours of practice. After the full course of 6 hours you can ride on your own.

### Is snowkiting safe?

With proper instruction and the right equipment, the risks are manageable. Our kites have safety systems, we always start you on a trainer kite, and we choose the kite size to suit the conditions and your control.

### What conditions do you need?

Wind and good snow cover on the plateau. Whether a given day works is the instructor's call — the Conditions page shows the wind, snow and temperature on the plateau, now and for the days ahead.

### Can I use my own skis or snowboard?

Yes — in fact you need to: you bring your own skis or snowboard. We do not rent them out, but if you have none, we can help you find somewhere that does.

### How do I book a lesson?

Use the contact form, or call or email us. We agree a date based on the forecast. Booking a few days ahead is best, since we schedule around the wind rather than the calendar.

### When is the snowkiting season on Vitosha?

From December to the end of April, subject to conditions. January and February are the most reliable months, when the plateau holds good snow and the wind is at its steadiest.

### What does a lesson include?

Instruction from an instructor and the kite equipment: kite, harness, helmet and radio. Not included: skis or a snowboard, ski goggles and warm clothing. Goggles are required.

### What happens if the weather turns?

We move the lesson to a date we choose and let you know. There is no fee, and we take no prepayment, so there is nothing to refund.

### Is there parking?

Yes — parking at Aleko is free.
